Do I have the most current version of a standard?

ANSI standards are periodically revised and reaffirmed by the ANSI Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) A108. TCNA uses the nomenclature system described below to indicate the year in which an ANSI standard has been revised and/or reaffirmed and when it was made available (released). To determine if you have the most current version of a standard, check your copy against the list of the most current version available.

Last revised year dates

The year date attached to the name of the standard indicates the most recent year in which the standard was revised. For example, ANSI A108.11-2010 was last revised in 2010. Those with an earlier copy (e.g., ANSI A108.11-2008) would have to acquire the newer version in order to have the most current version of the standard.

Reaffirmed year dates

If a standard is not revised within five years (of its creation or since its last revision), it must be reaffirmed in order to stay in effect. The year(s) in which a standard has been reaffirmed is provided, in brackets, after the “last revised” year date. For example, ANSI A108.1B-1999 [Reaffirmed 2005 and 2010] is an installation standard that was last revised in 1999 and reaffirmed (without changes) in 2005 and 2010.

Release dates

Each copy of a standard published by TCNA carries a release date on its cover, which is the date on which that particular copy was made available. Use the release date to check if an Update has subsequently been issued to bring an earlier version current. Typically, an Update provides minor changes and/or corrections and is available as a free download from tcnatile.com.
