Tile Council of North America (TCNA) posthumously honored Mr. Herman Schock as the TCNA Art Tile Person of the Year at Coverings 2010 in Orlando, FL.
After getting his start in the tile industry as an apprentice, Mr. Schock worked as a contractor in the Los Angeles area from the 1960’s until he retired in 1992. He was an active member of the Associated Tile Contractors of Southern California (ATC of So. Cal.) and served on the Tile Setters Apprenticeship Committee, Local 18 from 1982 until 1992. He was well-known as a master craftsman who took great pride in his work and was always willing to share his knowledge and expertise with apprentices.
Mr. Schock’s primary area of expertise was high-end custom homes, glass mosaics, and mural installations. His many accomplishments include well-over 100 glass mosaic murals throughout the U.S., including one at Disney World. He was also famous for his signature freeform Roman tubs. In fact, last year’s Spectrum Awards Grand Prize winner made a special trip to Los Angeles to interview and learn the art of designing and building a Roman tub from the ‘Master’. As always, Mr. Schock was happy to share.
After his retirement, Mr. Schock continued to give of his time to the industry. Mr. Schock conducted lectures on various methods of tile installations, in particular ceramic mosaics. He was the recipient of the prestigious CTI Golden Tile Award and Tile Contractor of the Year Award. He won CTI’s Perpetual Trophy on numerous occasions for his tile installations, including three consecutive wins from 1981-83.
“We are very pleased to honor Mr. Herman Schock with this award,” commented TCNA Executive Director, Eric Astrachan. “Not only are his creations works of art, but he impacted the lives of countless installers with his commitment to quality, education, and professionalism.”
